2 Versions from IR

This is one of my favourite compositions of IR – ‘Kanne Kalaimaane’ from Moondram Pirai in Tamil and ‘Surmai Akhiyon Mein’ from Sadma (the Hindi remake of the Tamil film). This composition is a great lullaby and an all-time favourite of many in my generation. Of late I noticed that there are some differences in both these versions. For one, the Hindi version is a tad bit slower than the Tamil version. I am not sure about the musical terminology to explain this, but I find the Hindi version is slower than the Tamil version, and slightly tends toward the ‘pathos’ genre. The Hindi version also has a more polished orchestration and arrangement. Both songs are amazingly rendered by Yesudas in his soft and unmatchable voice. Listen to both the versions and check if you can feel the difference:

1] Kanne Kalaimaane (Moondram Pirai/Tamil)

2] Surmai Akhiyon Mein (Sadma/Hindi)

I like both the versions, with all their differences.
